Make sure your backlinks are keyword rich, so if you're optimising the term "blue bananas" make sure the link is
<a href="http://www.bluebananas.co.uk">blue bananas</a> (for example).

I agree! Get back links on relevant and DoFollow sites. Google gives more value on the quality compared to those irrelevant sites that you are getting.

Try focusing on SERP to drive traffic on your site. Aside from off-page optimization techniques (Which I'm pretty sure you've done), focus on your content and make sure that your website is optimized with the use of keywords.

Focus on the keywords you are using presently, evaluate it carefully. Keywords are very essential factor for SERP and this will drive more chances on your performance, also consider the previous comments.

Pagerank and Ranking are totally two different things. Having a high PR has nothing to do with having a high position in search results. You need to build more quality links to improve your SERP.
