SEO = Search engine Optimization
SEM = Search engine marketing

SEO is forever part of your site, you can not go a step ahead without it.
If your site is SEO friendly then it will take soon good ranking, otherwise you have to wait very long time may be life time.

SEM is generally use to get more and more traffics to your site it can be quality traffics and also normal traffics, SEM also effects your site ranking but SEO is father of SEM.
